There is not much left to say but I have a ton of pictures that I will eventually get in photobucket to share... should anyone be interested... I'll leave a link here and on my main blog.

OH! Darn.. I found a 3 acre plot of land in Rapid City.. need to check in to that. Might as well toss a trailer on it and have a place to stay during the bike rally.? And when we are bored we can ... perhaps build a house? You know, during those rare moments we find ourselves sitting around.

Did I say even my husband finds reasons to go back?

So.. yes, I wanted to go to Custer Park but after hearing the news that there was a shooting involving a couple biker gangs. Now, before I go further.. I must interject and point out that I am not sure of any other extremely large gathering of people.... People of all ages, races, vocations, etc. were there and behaviour out of most was unexpectedly outstanding.

However, suddenly I didn't need to see buffalo anymore. The thought of getting tied up as a witness to something I'd really rather not be a part of put Custer Park, for the time being at the bottom of the list. You'll note... (more)

Cousin dude.. eh, I could use names I suppose but I like to protect the innocent. Most times at least. ..anyway, Cousin dude and his son managed to take us on some memorable rides. I started leaving the camera behind because quite frankly, in as much as I wanted pictures I did want to actually SEE some of this countryside too.

However my husband still had a request that had gotten rained out. He'd seen this place "Devil's Tower" in old westerns and he wanted to go there. I don't remember seeing it but I haven't been in to westerns since I was a kid. This time, we'd leave in... (more)

We did not pay to go to Mt. Rushmore. You really do have a better view for pictures if you do I suppose. We had it on that itinerary that
I had given up on; but on the day we first saw the George Washington
profile from the road I happened to turn back as we were leaving and
there it was... Mt. Rushmore in all it's splendor.

From
this vantage point it looked more like what it originally was....
crafted in the rocky hills of South Dakota and less like a tourist
attraction. Or at least that is my take on it and if it's otherwise..
please don't ruin it! I rather like the art... (more)

The next days were spent largely at my husband's cousin's shop trying to get everyone together to go for rides. Cousin knew others that came to town for Sturgis and I suppose because of the hanging around the days all seemed to just blur together.

The time spent with family is cherished. That goes without saying but when one of those family members ends up on the phone trying to light a match under people's rear ends you start to feel bad for him. And, let's be honest, because I'm sure cousin would most certainly understand this... we spent too much money to go hang out in the... (more)

The following day in Rapid City was a quiet one. We were able to visit with his aunt and uncle.. I think. Days are beginning to become just a blur. I was up until the wee hours of the morning to make one last motel room reservation for the last night we weren't supposed to be there. When thousands converge in one area finding a hotel becomes a challenge! But I did it and after two nights in the waterfall hotel we were on our way to a Super 8 or some such hotel for the night.

Come morning though we'd wake up out of our Super 8 and move on to Montana with a bag on the back of... (more)

Stuck in Rapid City

Now officially stuck in Rapid City my itinerary was trashed. While I'm trying not to complain about scratching off Yellowstone he kept threatening to buy a new truck. But the one in the shop was still under warranty. We had money for the vacation not a vacation and a truck.

The trailer was parked for the duration at his cousins. We managed to get a hotel room for two nights. I heard only the blur of the woman saying something about two rooms. Why a blur? There was a waterfall.. of sorts..inside the lobby. It kept capturing my attention and all I heard was "two rooms." ... (more)

There is little to say of our first day on the road. So, please don't look for much here.

My husband already had his aunt's address entered into the gizmo I call "The Chatterbox." It's a GPU ..thing. It tells you where to go. On top of the dash board was the atlas. Drinks were in the cup holders and we had more stuff than on any other trip we have ever been on. Computer, portable DVD player, iced tea mix for the water, a notebook to write in and of course my pillow and blanket. I do get cold with the AC on and he gets hot with it off. I like snuggling under... (more)

Plans were made in November for this vacation; one my husband wanted to
go on for years. We had originally planned to leave Friday, August
4th. Go directly to Rapid City, South Dakota for the week of the
Sturgis Bike Rally and come home. That was in November.

In
the months prior to our departure my husband found out he'd had family
in Rapid City. Given that hotel rates seem to raise for the bike rally
it would make sense to stay with family but we did not want to impose.
It would have been too much like one of those relatives that don't
bother with you until they want a place... (more)
